Northern Idaho Aphid Monitoring Network
(The Legume Virus Project)

Description

The Legume Virus Project was established in 2007 to provide decision support and seasonal monitoring of pea aphids and viruses in the Palouse region. In this project, aphids are monitored with a network of field-side pan traps and the data are provided on a weekly basis on the project website. Aphids are tested for viruses and those results are also posted. 

Impacted Crops

Legumes (winter and spring peas, lentils) in the Palouse region of Northern Idaho and Eastern Washington.

Who is Involved

In coordination with Palouse growers, PNW Farmers Cooperative, and ProGene Plant Research, Eigenbrode lab has been conducting the project. The information provided on the Legume Virus Project website has been consulted by producers and pest managers. The system is being maintained and expanded to include monitoring other emerging pests, and there are plans to extend its footprint to adjacent pea growing regions where pea aphids and viruses are becoming more prevalent.
